It's not ALL about weather around here.  Sometimes I like to pass along some musings or just fun facts.  And, I have one for today!

Did you know that today is South Carolina Day!

That's right, today you can celebrate the Old South.

Here's the state flag of South Carolina:

It is one of the most unique flags in the union.  It is simple, two colors:  blue and white.  A palmetto tree in the center and a crescent moon in the upper left canton.

As far as I know it's the only state flag that has a crescent moon.  Now the moon appeared on the flag from the very beginning back in 1775.  But of course today, there is some controversy as the only nations that have crescent moons on their flags are Islamic nations.  A few folks have made the connection.

But, let's look back in history.  Here are a few of the state flags that have flown over South Carolina:





The one thing they all have in common is the crescent moon.

Other unique facts about the state of South Carolina:

It's capital:  Columbia

It's ranked 40th and amount of land.

It's ranked 23rd in population.

It's highest point is Sassafras Mountain at 3,560'.

It's lowest point is sea level.

Before statehood on May 23, 1788 is was considered a 'province.'

It's a red state in the U.S. Senate being represented by two Republicans however in the U.S. House of Representatives it's a purple state as it's districts are split between both parties.

In the national presidential elections is has voted Republican ever cycle since 1980.  However, before 1964 it was consistently Democrat all the way back to 1880.
